AI question generator — build question banks from your own material

An AI question generator drafts assessment items from source material you supply — notes, textbooks, slides, lecture transcripts or past papers — in the formats you specify. It is best understood as a drafting tool that removes the blank-page problem for a subject expert, not as a way to publish questions without review.

How generation from your own material works

The document is parsed and split into passages. For each passage the system identifies what is assessable — a definition, a process, a numerical relationship, a distinction between two similar concepts — and drafts items against it in the format you asked for: multiple choice, short answer, true/false, numerical. Because generation is anchored to a specific passage, each item can be traced back to its source, which is what makes review practical. A reviewer reads the passage and the question together rather than trying to verify a claim from memory.

What good distractors require

Writing the correct answer is the easy half. The difficulty in multiple choice is the wrong options: they must be wrong, plausible enough to attract a student who has half-understood the topic, and homogeneous in length and grammar so the answer is not guessable from shape alone. Generated distractors fail in two characteristic ways — they are obviously wrong, which makes the item too easy, or one is accidentally also correct, which makes it unfair. Both are quick for a subject expert to spot and neither is quick for the model to avoid.

Keeping a generated bank trustworthy over time

The risk with generation is volume: it becomes trivially easy to produce more questions than anyone reviews. Three habits keep a bank healthy. Approve items explicitly rather than by default, so nothing reaches a student unread. Track item performance once questions are live and retire the ones that discriminate poorly. And re-check items against the source whenever the underlying material is revised, because a question generated from last year’s syllabus does not announce that it has gone stale.

Realistic time saving

The honest description of the benefit is a change in the shape of the work, not its disappearance. Drafting fifty questions from scratch is slow and creatively taxing; reviewing and editing fifty drafted questions is faster and far less taxing, and the review is where a teacher’s expertise is actually worth spending. Vendors quoting a specific percentage of time saved are quoting a number that depends entirely on your subject, format and review standard. We would rather describe the mechanism and let you estimate your own.

Common questions

What can an AI question generator create questions from?

Any material you can upload — PDFs, slides, textbooks, lecture transcripts and past papers. Items are drafted against specific passages, so each one can be traced back to the source a reviewer needs to check it against.

Are generated questions accurate?

Usually close, occasionally wrong in ways that matter. The characteristic failures are a distractor that is accidentally also correct and a stem that is subtly ambiguous. Both are fast for a subject expert to catch, which is why the workflow keeps a human approval step rather than publishing directly.

How much time does this actually save?

It changes the shape of the work rather than removing it: drafting fifty questions from a blank page is slow, reviewing fifty drafts is not. Any vendor quoting a specific percentage is quoting a number that depends on your subject, format and review standard, so we would rather describe the mechanism and let you estimate.

Can it generate questions in languages other than English?

Sikgen AI delivers assessments in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. If you need a language outside that set, ask before assuming — we would rather tell you no than discover it during a rollout.
